An "Off-The-Shelf" Migration Strategy

An "Off-The-Shelf" Migration Strategy

Everyone knows data is critical to an organization's success, and your customers are no exception.

Unfortunately, data migrations distract your organization from focusing on what you do best; innovating competitive features, implementing new solutions, and accelerating your customers' processes.

What if we promised a better experience for your customer, customers' business users, and your implementation team?

Organizations discuss the best off-the-shelf solution for their implementation projects and overlook applying that same process to data migrations. Omitting an off-the-shelf process leads to custom data migrations with new risks and delayed timelines as the scope grows.

If your organization is not already doing so, consider the following approaches to help improve, eliminate, and reduce the bottlenecks caused by custom migrations:

1. Track the current costs of your migration teams, post-go-live support, and infrastructure on migration tasks to better understand the hidden cost of migrations within your organization.

2. Limit traditional data migration offerings to a "prescribed approach" or "off-the-shelf solution" approach by limiting the scope to specific fields for each module. Example offerings for traditional data migrations are listed below:

  • Data Migration Core ($$) - a traditional data migration offering with fewer fields that are critical to your customer's dayforward processes on your organization's platform
  • Data Migration Enterprise ($$$$) - a traditional data migration offering with more (limited) fields and information that are nice to have and tie into dayforward processes on your organization's platform

Traditional Data Migration projects should rarely support data that falls outside of the pre-defined objects and fields. It serves little to no value to bring historical data into the dayforward system that will not be looked at or used with day-forward processes.

Making exceptions will slow down your organization and haunt your customer and support team for months or even years.

3. Consider adding one or more alternative data migration solutions to support historical data left behind, reduce risk, simplify your traditional data migration scope, and provide SMBs with affordable alternatives. Example traditional data migrations are listed below:

PDF Migrations:

  • PDF Migration Core ($) - a templated PDF migration process for all customers limited to specific pre-templated layouts and fields
  • PDF Migration Enterprise ($ - $$$) - leverage an existing templated PDF migration process to provide the opportunity to customize reports, fields, and display

Data Archival

  • Data Archival ($ - $$$) - Solutions can be as simple as offering a few standard reports or as complex as custom reports tying together several systems.

LiftShift's Launch Platform

  • LiftShift's Launch platform standardizes unique approaches for customers to archive all historical data, integrate critical data directly into the dayforward platform, and export archived reports on the fly.

Unsure which approach to take or offer? Schedule a call with LiftShift to discuss your organization's migration strategy.

TL;DR: Custom Data Migrations are bottlenecking your implementations, delaying ARR, and distracting you from growth. Convert your traditional data migrations into off-the-shelf solutions and leverage alternative data migration approaches to provide customers with historical flexibility.
